Elephants, Buffalos and Hippos.
Other mammals frequently seen in the park include Gerenuk, Grant's

Vultures. The Uaso Nyiro River contains large numbers of Nile crocodile.
Optional activities:
. Samburu Culture.Conservative by nature the Samburu still cherish
and retain the customs and ceremonies of their ancestors, unlike
many other Kenyan tribes who have largely abandoned theirs. We are
fortunate at Sasaab to be immersed in Samburu culture and
traditions. It is not unusual to see a newly married couple walking
to their new home with all their possessions loaded onto the back of
a donkey, as they move to their new village to build their "white
house". The groom's head will be covered in red ochre. During the
rainy season the beautiful singing voices of the Samburu women can
be heard from the lodge as they bless the river in a ceremony
thanking God for the rain.
Manyatta Visit. It may be possible for you to visit
one of our neighbouring villages to gain an insight into the
fascinating culture of the Samburu people and how they survive in
this harsh environment.
Schedule:01
The best time to visit is either in the early morning as the
manyatta awakes and herds leave for the day to graze; or late
afternoon as they return
Schedule:02
On a Wednesday or a Thursday morning there will be an opportunity
for you to visit a traditional Samburu market, a place where men and
women come from far and wide to gather together and buy or exchange
wares and livestock. Every person dressed in their traditional
finery. A wonderfully busy and colorful experience
Schedule:03
The ultimate blend of wilderness and culture. In a natural rock
amphitheatre a short drive from Sasaab we can arrange a spectacular
Samburu dance ceremony. As the sun disappears, the echoes of the
morani dancers singing, bounce of the rock walls and fill the night
air. This is followed by a sumptuous starlit Bush dinner under the
African night sky Day 3 : Lake Nakuru National
park.
We break the camp soon after break fast and proceed to Lake Nakuru
National park. Game is viewed as we exit the park. Lunch enroute
followed by an afternoon game drives as the pick lake. Dinner and
overnight at a campsite.
Lake Nakuru is a shallow alkaline lake on the edges of Nakuru town
and lies a distance of 160 kilometers from Nairobi. The lake is
world famous as home to millions of flamingoes. The number of
flamingoes depends on the water level which determines the quantity
of algae on which the birds feed. Flamingoes are known to migrate to
other Rift Valley lakes whenever the water level is low. The
National Park surrounds the lake and was gazetted to protect the
colony of flamingoes as well as provide sanctuary for endangered
species such as the rhino. There are about 25 white and black
rhinos, one of the largest concentrations in the country. Predators
are also residents to this park while Rothschild’s giraffe have been
trans-located into the park for safety
Day 4 : Lake Nakuru – Maasai Mara
We break the camp soon after breakfast and travel south through the
beautiful savannahs and plains of the Rift Valley and reach our base
camp site, where we enjoy another evening out bush under the
far-reaching African sky. Game is viewed as we proceed to our
campsite for Dinner and overnight stay.
Day 5 & 6 Maasai Mara
Spend the next two days on game drives exploring the Masai Mara. The
open grasslands are home to incredibly rich and varied wildlife and
the awesome, annual migration of millions of wildebeest and antelope
is the highlight of any visit to Africa from July to September.
Optional balloon safari can be arranged at an extra coat of US$ 450
per person.
The Maasai Mara Game Reserve is arguably Kenya’s most popular game
sanctuary. It is the most famous and most visited game reserve in
Kenya. The film ‘Out of Africa’ was made to a great extent in this
reserve. Virtually every type of wildlife can be seen at the Mara. A
spectacle worth seeing is the annual migration of millions of
wildebeest, zebra and gazelle from Serengeti plains across the
Tanzania border and the Mara River to reach Maasai Mara grazing
fields from late June. The dramatic crossing of the river and the
preying on the migrants by predators can be viewed from early July
to August. The reserve abounds with birdlife since dose to about 452
species have been recorded. Hot air balloon safaris are readily

Kenya/Tanzania Migration cycle
The endless plains of east Africa are the setting for the world's
greatest wildlife spectacle - the 1.5 million animal ungulate
(wildebeest) migration. From the vast Serengeti plains to the
champagne colored hills of Kenya's Masai Mara over 1.4 million
wildebeest and 200,000 zebra and gazelle, relentlessly tracked by
Africa's great predators, migrate in a clockwise fashion over 1,800
miles each year in search of rain ripened grass.
There is no real beginning or end to a wildebeest's journey. Its
life is an endless pilgrimage, a constant search for food and water.
The only beginning is at the moment of birth. An estimated 400,000
wildebeest calves are born during a six week period early each year
- usually between late January and mid-March.Animal Migration
crossing Mara river, Africa
DECEMBER, JANUARY, FEBRUARY, MARCH
The Serengeti National Park / Ngorongoro Conservation Area is
arguably the most impressive wildlife sanctuary in the world. During
the months December through March the seemingly unending plains of
the southern Serengeti and the Conservation Area are inhabited by
enormous herds of wildebeest and zebra. The great herds graze on
rain ripened grass. In the calving season (late January through mid
March) the herds concentrate at the Ndutu and Salei plains (
Southern Serengeti / Ngorongoro Conservation Area) attracting the
attention of predators like lion, cheetah and hyena.
APRIL, MAY
During the months April and May the depleted plains are unable to
sustain the endless herds. The migration, sweeping west and north,
moves from the short grass plains of the southern Serengeti /
Ngorongoro Conservation Area to the long grass plains and woodland
of the Serengeti's western Corridor, almost to Lake Victoria . This
period is during the long rains and is considered off season for
wildlife viewing in east Africa as roads are often impassable.
JUNE
By the end of May the wildebeest have exhausted the Western
Corridor's best pastures and the herds must move further north.
Entering the Lamai Wedge and the Mara Triangle breeding occurs May
through June. This is a transitional period between the rains and
the dry season.
JULY, AUGUST, SEPTEMBER, OCTOBER
By July the countless herds have amassed along the swollen Mara
River - a final barrier from the short sweet grasses of the Masai
Mara. Sometimes the crossing place they have chosen is shallow
allowing the majority of animals to pass safely. In other areas the
waters boil with drowning wildebeest and slashing crocodiles.
Between July and October the wildebeest reside in the Mara.
NOVEMBER
The arrival of the short rains call the migration southward. As
November ends the migration is making its way back to the southern
Serengeti and early in the year they once again give birth. The
circle of life is complete.
*Note - the migration is a natural event and the timing varies month
by month; year by year.
